Belly rings

Belly rings - Belly rings are often thought of as the precursor to today's piercings, but history shows us differently. Belly rings were one of the first piercings to be seen as mainstream. This often makes people think that they have been around for quite a while. However, as history shows us, they are mere babies in the piercing world.

While nose piercings and even nipple piercings have been around for centuries if not longer, navel piercings didn't get noticed until the 1990's. While it seems that everyone today has one, we truly have Christy Turlington to thank for bringing them to the world's notice. For centuries the female stomach has been considered an erogenous zone, but one that was often covered by clothing. Even when women began to show their ankles, they still kept their belly covered. Then in the mid 50's, the bikini was thrust into the public eye and it became acceptable to flaunt your stomach.
