The main reason that purchasing from a dealership is that you the consumer are protected by the Sale of Goods Act, which states that goods that are sold must be of an acceptable standard. When purchasing a vehicle privately this will not protect you. When looking for my own car at the Mini and Lexus Dealerships I found that reputable dealers are members of a trade association and are all bound by codes of conduct. In the UK when looking for a suitable dealership look out for signs with the Retail Motor Industry Federation signs.
Franchised outlets usually have a pick of the best cars around and will offer the consumer the best deals on warranties. Using dealers are also hugely convenient as you will be able to browse at all the different vehicles at your own leisure-if nothing is suitable then you will be able to return in a few weeks time and look at the new stock, be it new cars or previously owned.
